It's hard making a review about this book without dropping hints about the ending as I do not want to spill who would end up with Erika. In that sense, let me start this by commenting on the end first. I find myself torn between liking how the story went and thinking the ending a bit too perfect. The former because of course, who would not want a full epic drama kind of love story, right? That proof that great love exists! We all want to believe and read about that. Yes, if you are in need of something to make you believe in the grand L O V E, this book will give you just that! The latter being that it was, for my own taste, a bit too foolproof as it wrapped up perfectly, ironing out wrinkles in the side stories so all gets their one big happily ever after which often, does not really translate truth in real life. Mind me not though as it just might be a bitter side of me talking. Haha!
In general though, the story did have some butterfly-in-the-stomach moments a few times, most in the subtle silent moments between either Jerome and Erika. The book is also a liberating and refreshing in terms how it decided to tackle and take on a broken heart. Raw emotions are tapped too, especially as the heartaches as well as the moving on- or the battle to- that the heroes and heroines face with were carefully narrated in the story, making its relatability -in the sense that we read about our pain and love and know that somewhere someone relates to it and goes through the same thing- comforting and reassuring. The struggle of a person who is or was broken by love between living in the past and breathing the present is what will make one hold on to the book up to the very ending, wanting to cheer for the characters' triumph, just as we'd want to cheer for ourselves.
I think the book will make for a good Filipino chic flick too.
